The Battle of Waterloo was a defining event for Napoleon and all of Europe. There was where the French army conquering the world was defeated by the troops of the Duke of Wellington. Napoleon resigned and was exiled to the island of St. Helena afterwards. Of course, everything in the previously unknown Belgian village is all about the battle and two opposition generals. The Butte du Lion is an artificial hill 40 meters high raised on the spot where the Duke of Orange, one of Wellington's generals was injured. 226 stairs lead to the statue of a lion at the top of the hill. Cycloramas became popular for the first time in century XIX. The panoramic painting of Louis de Moulins, 110 meters long, depicting the Battle of Waterloo, was completed in 1912 and was placed in a gallery specifically designed to accommodate it. 3 km from Waterloo, there is a wax museum where the heroes of the battle come alive in the form of wax figures and paintings. Even the farm where Napoleon spent the day before the battle is dedicated to his memory.
The inn where Wellington stayed the night before the battle turned into a museum. The Eglise St. Joseph Chapel is just across the street. The small church of St. Joseph was originally a royal cahpel. Today, it is a monument dedicated to the victims of the battle. It was considerably large, in order to provide ample space for commemorative plaques of fallen soldiers. Most of these tablets were made from the donations of soldiers who pay homage to the memory of their commanders. The battle took place on June 18. Every year, there is an anniversary spectacle performed by war history enthusiasts dressed in period costumes that recreate the day's events. The war game table established in the museum is the subject of heated debates. The battle can also be played as a board game or a computer game. These are also available at gift shops which are a constant feature throughout including waterloo as well.
